Tdml and Udml are file extensions generated with DeltaMetric.
Files ending with .tdml are tables exported from DeltaMetric. They contain the description of the table, data composing the cells and the renderings associated to these cells.
These files can be read with any DeltaMetric version. To do so, go to the main menu and click [Table: Open…].
Note: you can save several tables in one .tdml file. To do so, go to the scenarist and select one or several tables. Right-click on the tables you selected, and click [Save N tables…].
Files ending with .udml are projects generated by DeltaMetric. A DeltaMetric project contains all the table descriptions and the processing sequence you applied to generate these tables. The rendering of each column of each table, final or not, are stocked in this project.
Note: when saving a project (.udml file) from the main menu [Project > Save under…], the option “stock the data” enables you to decide if you want to embark or not the data in your project.
If you decide to do so, the saving process might be longer and the file heavier. Otherwise, the saving process is fast and the file light. However, when re-opening this file, an update is needed to retrieve the data you selected in your project.
If you want to share your results, make sure the user will have access to the source of the data or save your project with the data.
DeltaMetric manages data containing multiple values, such as applications or value distributions.
These formats are not necessarily compatible with classical data management tools which deal with more classical type of data (text or numbers columns).
To import your data towards third party tools, you can transform a column of data containing multiple values by deploying it.
You can deploy into columns
Each element of your data containing multiple values becomes a column, and the cell contains the number linked to the element.
Select the data containing multiple values column. In the main menu, click [Synthesis: Deployment in columns…].
Each column corresponds to an element present at least once in one of the data containing multiple values of the column.
You can deploy into lines
Each couple of data (element, number) will generate a line. The other cells will be repeated.
Select the column of data containing multiple values. In the main menu, click [Synthesis: Deployment into lines…].
If you have several columns of data containing multiple values, you can deploy all of them at the same time.
For more information, go to the bottom right corner of the assistant panel, and click the [?] button.
Let’s be honest, DeltaMetric has many functions, is an innovative tool, will make you save time and money, and will help you to understand your data in a better way. However, in Business Intelligence, the software market is very broad and business arguments differ. So, can DeltaMetric really help you?
Graphics versus exploration for reporting
I you want to convince your target by using a unique graphic, or let your artistic spirit talk, you can use standard office and drawing softwares.
If DeltaMetric offers graphic and diffusion solutions, these functions are not going to convince you of its importance. If you want to create ONE graphic representation of your data in order to quickly see an information in a drawing instead of in a list of numbers, then you should do ONE graphic. In this case, many basic softwares already installed on your computer will fit perfectly…but we are going the right way.
If you created your graphic, but you don’t have one, but 10, 100, 1000 graphics or even more, then you noticed that your graphic was useless, because you cannot see anything.
If you wanted to adjust your data to make this graphic easy to read, by standardizing them or using other techniques, then you saw the limits of your basic softwares, and DeltaMetric may be able to help you.
The same way, if thanks to your tablet reporting tool you applied a first filter, changed the granularity, then applied a second filter, then came back to your initial data, and multiplied the actions between filters and changing granularity, and that in the end you do not remember your first graphics, then again, DeltaMetric can help you with this.
DeltaMetric’s primary function is not to share the conclusions of your data analysis, but to help you analyze them to extract information (which you might want to share), and this, thanks to graphic representation.
Nowadays, graphic BI can be divided into two parts:
- Reporting BI, which consists of creating dashboards
- Analytic BI, meaning data exploration to understand which are the indicators to watch for
DeltaMetric is an analytic BI tool to use before your data analysis to explore your data.
“Do I need DeltaMetric or not?”
You know you do analytic BI. So if one of the followings reminds you of womething, maybe you should spend a bit more time on our website:
- You have an indicator (volume, turnover, traffic, consumption, satisfaction…)
- This indicator evolves with an axis (a time axis), or changes (number of answers to a poll, multiple measurements…)
- However, this indicator is measured with another axis (geographical, distribution channel…)
- I do not have one but several indicators (volume x turnover x promotional rate)
- I need to analyze the evolution or the variation of one of my indicators with another indicators, which also evolves.

If we had to sum up DeltaMetric?
DeltaMetric does not create dashboards.
DeltaMetric creates dashboards and enables you to compare them:
- Graphic design used to explore your data
- Analytic BI applied to their variations.

DeltaMetric is in-memory. The more memory you have on your computer, the more DeltaMetric can work on large amounts of data.
However, the access to the entire memory depends on your computer and your operating system.
If your computer is 32 bits, DeltaMetric will be limited to use 1 GB of your memory. This enables you to analyze small amounts of data and to discover the functions of DeltaMetric Starter.
Nowadays, most of the computers are 64 bits. Thanks to this change, you can exploit to a maximum your computer’s memory.
To do so, before installing DeltaMetric, make sure you have a 64 bit version of Java, which DeltaMetric uses to work.
